Panagbenga 2018: Celebration of Culture and Creativity
Known for its cool climate all year-round, Baguio City is also the home to one of the Philippines’ most celebrated festivals – the Baguio Flower Festival, more popularly known as Panagbenga.
Coming from the kankana-ey origin, Panagbenga literally means “season of blossoming” in the Highland dialect. This festival is the symbol of the rich culture of the Cordilleras that amidst diversity, the Cordillerans and locals alike are still in unity while celebrating the region’s bounty in every aspect.
Panagbenga is also one of the most awaited events in the City of Baguio after the Christmas Break and before the summer season begins. It is the perfect way to start spending the chilly climate in and around the bustling city.
During the month-long celebration of Panagbenga 2018, various activities are slated for the locals and tourists alike to enjoy. For the opening ceremonies, an opening (elimination) parade will start the festivities that will determine which elementary schools will showcase their talents on the Grand Street Parade on February 24. As a UNESCO Creative City, there will also be a kite-flying competition and Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom painting activity at the Melvin Jones Grandstand and Football grounds (which will later be shown during the main parades). Note, too, that the final exhibition area of the Grand Street Parade will be at the Baguio Athletic Bowl and the staging area of the Grand Float Parade will be at the Melvin Jones Grandstand.
