Virtual Visita Iglesia: 7 Churches to visit during the Quarantine
Virtual Visita Iglesia
As this year’s Holy Week is somewhat special, let us take advantage of technology this time. The enhanced community quarantine made our travel goals come to a halt. That is why I am taking you to a virtual tour of churches around the Philippines during this time of Visita Iglesia. I have also listed some of the lesser known churches that need to be discovered and be more well-known! Read along!

The Holy Week is one of the most important events for Catholics around the world, but for this year, events will be celebrated differently. In this blog, I am going to bring you to seven (7) churches I have personally been as part of a virtual Visita Iglesia.
1. Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral – Baguio City
Commonly known as the Baguio Cathedral, this church was formerly known as St. Patrick’s Church before dedicating it to Our Lady of the Atonement. As one of the most-photographed tourist spots in Baguio, this Church is known because of its pink façade and interiors making it more remarkable.
Situated in Mary Hill, the Baguio Cathedral also offers a good view of the mountains and the bustling central business district along Session Road.
2. Sta. Monica Parish Church – Sarrat, Ilocos Norte
Located in my hometown of Sarrat in Ilocos Norte, the Sta. Monica Church is considered to be the longest brick church in the province (and probably in the Philippines) with a 137-meter nave. Beside the church is the famous Casa del Palacio Real (where they have shot scenes from the movie “Heneral Luna.”)

3. Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – Intramuros, Manila
Situated in the heart of the Walled City, the Manila Cathedral is witness to many historical events that shaped the Philippine landscape today. It’s neo-romanesque architecture emanates from Plaza de Roma and its interiors are one for the books. It is also the church where Pope Francis held his first mass during his papal visit in 2015.
Also known as the Navalas Church, this place of worship is the oldest and the only existing heritage church in Guimaras. The most notable feature of this church is that it is enclosed in a stone wall and a watchtower which served as a safeguard against pirates in the early times.
5. Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage – Almeria, Biliran
The Almeria Catholic Church in Biliran has one of the most impressive yet simple façades I have ever seen. This church is near the Biliran Strait and suits as the home of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. This shrine is devoted to the bountiful blessings the locals receive.
6. San Pedro Cathedral – Davao City
Honoring the first-ever Pope of the Catholic Church, Saint Peter, The Davao Cathedral also boasts an interesting architecture that truly captures any eye. Being the seat of the Archdiocese of Davao, the San Pedro Cathedral is a perfect venue for any Visita Iglesia as it is also strategically located in the City’s Central Business District. You can easily notice this church as its façade resembles that of a native hat.
7. Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – Zamboanga City
Being true to its name as Asia’s Latin City, Zamboanga City is no stranger to churches, too. The most notable church in this part of the Philippines is the Zamboanga Metropolitan Cathedral in La Purisima Street. Though its architecture today is a bit modern from the rest, this seat of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga is also one of the popular tourist destinations in the City. Its immaculately white structure makes it more interesting and really one for the books!
How about you? What other churches or religious sites can you suggest for us to visit in this (virtual) edition of Visita Iglesia? Always remember that it is not the place that counts but the expression of our faith! See you around!
