My Bakun Trio Falls Experience

Bakun Waterfalls Hopping in one day!
Being one of the more popular provinces in the Cordilleras, Benguet still has many undiscovered gems waiting to be discovered. Waterfall-hopping is actually one of my favorite things to do when traveling. For the second time, I have had another great experience in the Municipality of Bakun, Benguet – particularly the Bakun Trio Falls!

Benguet is home to some of the highest peaks in the Philippines and is also a cradle for some of the best Mother Nature has to offer. I personally have not explored much of the province and I must say, there is more yet to be discovered. This includes secluded waterfalls that only a select few are lucky to see and experience, especially in the northern parts of Benguet.

What to Expect in Bakun
Approximately 3 to 4 hours from Baguio, Bakun is one of the farthest municipalities in Benguet. It is my second time visiting the place as I visited the Bakun Trio Falls last 2019 – and I still have no words but “wow!”

If it is your goal to go nature-bathing, you have come to the right place. The scenery of Bakun Trio Falls is just dope. With a view from their new barangay hall, you can see lots of mountain ranges with waterfalls in between – the famous “crying mountains of Benguet” (the other ones are located in Kibungan).
Bakun Waterfalls Hopping!

Aside from mountain climbing, a.k.a. “The Bakun Trio,” there are also numerous waterfalls that you can visit! I again joined a ‘joiner group’ (organized by The Northern Nomads!) and we trekked the three popular waterfalls in the Bakun. Here they are in order of our visit:
Pattan Falls

Just a 30- to 45-minute hike from the jump-off point, Pattan Falls is like the “Angel Falls of Bakun.” Its quiet façade is one for the books and you can even see Mangta Falls down below! Its multi-tier appearance and a 180-degree view is set like a stage with the soft water dropping from a narrow mouth. It is one of the easier treks among the 3 waterfalls in Bakun.
Mangta Falls

From Pattan Falls, Mangta Falls is around 1 to 1.5 hours hike. Before reaching Mangta, you get to pass through numerous and big water pipes developed by a nearby hydroelectric plant. One sign that you are near Mangta Falls is a hanging bridge you have to cross right across the hydroelectric plant and a short 15-30 minute hike from the bridge. I can say this waterfall is one of its kind in Bakun. Coming from a steep cliff, its waters fall to a pond carved by surrounding rocks and cerulean water. The falls are better during the rainy season as the downpour is stronger and wider.
Tekip Falls

Tekip Falls is one of the nearest waterfalls from the jump-off point in Bakun. You can hike to the falls for about 30 minutes. (Along the way, you get to see the Tres Marias Falls from afar.) The cascades of the falls make it more awesome (yes!) as it spreads out on the entire façade of the mountain. It is also a good place to bathe as the water is cooler and drops higher. The rock formations below the falls are also a good spot for photos. As I said earlier, it is better to visit these falls during the rainy season. 🙂
Registration Details
Registration for any activity in Bakun is at its Old Municipal Hall. They are open every day and it is encouraged that you contact them beforehand. They will assist you immediately once you arrive.
Tour Guide Fees:
Hikers are required to engage with a tour guide in a ratio of 1:6 persons. If you exceed 6 individuals, you will have to pay the guide PhP 100 per excess. But you should not exceed 8 individuals. If you are beyond 8 persons, you are going to need two (2) guides.
For this particular tour, I suggest you join a group tour so that your experience would be hassle-free. You can contact The Northern Nomads on Facebook or e-mail me here for more information (and other exciting tours in and around Northern Philippines!)
